Lucas Arts has decided to re-make SWG, a game upgrade. There will be new graphics, changes to character classes and jedi, and a completely new combat system (fully manually controlled instead of hotbar clicking), there's no item decay, max level changed to 90, etc.

The current 34 professions will merge into 9 classes, giving them all several paths. (ranged, melee, explosives=commando for instance)

You don't train skills anymore, you only get 1 kind of xp and just get skills automatically.

Jedi will be a normal profession just like the others, the village will be removed and anyone can become a jedi. Bounty hunters will no longer hunt player jedi, they can only do NPC missions.

Quote:
What do you mean by "fast-action"?

Combat is now more action-oriented and feels like the action-packed combat depicted in the Star Wars movies – the new system is about 4 times faster than the current combat interaction. Movement speeds are fast and weapons fire at incredibly high rates of speed. These high rates of speed for movement and combat bring the Star Wars Galaxies combat experience to life and put players in control of every move and swing of a weapon.

However, ranged combat is not the only way to enjoy this great feature – melee combatants will also attack in similar fashion using the same keyboard and mouse functionality.

Pfft! All SOE is doin is reducing the originality of SWG. Before the CU there were no levels like in EQ2 or WoW which is what made it so fun. You could be a master smuggler aswell as a master musician or master architect. Now if ya really wanna kick ass in combat ya gotta be CL 60-70, ya can't have any non combat skills. Unless ya have the money for an alt account but think about it, not everyone has got the time and funds ta manage to seperate accounts.

True ya can grind up to unlock your jedi and get a 2nd char slot but i don't really wanna do all those quests for just a another character. Smile

There won't be any quests to unlock jedi, the village has been removed so jedi is a base class just like the rest.

They made the 9 classes to be represented by people from the movies;

    # Bounty Hunter (Based on Boba Fett)
    # Commando (Based on Commander Cody)
    # Jedi (Based on Luke Skywalker)
    # Medic (Based on 2-1B)
    # Smuggler (Based on Han Solo)
    # Officer (Based on Princess Leia)
    # Spy (Based on Princess Leia as the Bounty Hunter Boussh)
    # Entertainer (Based on Oola)
    # Trader (Based on Lando Calrissian)

The smuggler includes Melee Combat, Ranged Combat, Dirty Tricks Techniques and includes a bunch of special skills.
Entertainer includes Dancing, Musicianship, Image Design.

Looks like the architect profession will be removed, but people who are already architects and politicians will be able to keep them until they change.

Do you know if this is going to be a patch upgrade, or retail purchase? I just bought the game yesterday, and plan on installing it tonight.

They'll patch the game, I'm guessing instead of putting a 3gb patch they'll add smaller updates for a while.

The Test Center is being patched tomorrow.

you're the only person i know that is going back to SWG after hearing about a new patch, specially this one.

they're making this game into more crap, less fun, and worse for the people that have been playing for years. and i thought there couldn't be a worse thing than the CU.

Bah! I'm not gonna bother arguing with ya Olink cause you obviously don't understand how bad this revamp screws up the game. They are combining all of the various professions into classes making it so streamlined it makes SWG look like an FPS(except ya pay 15 bucks a month). What's even worse is that Jedi is now a basic profession which totally throws off the realism of the SW timeline. After this patch everyone who wants to be a Jedi will be respecing to Jedi making the game totaly unbalanced. They might aswell change the name of the game to SWJ(Star Wars Jedi).

But i'm not gonna start a rant here. If ya wanna argue with me then shoot me an IM on msn. Smile

Well, I'm excited by the new changes. I've had a character on Sunrunner for some time now. As a longtime FPS player, I love the idea of them implementing a more... hands-on, intense, fast-paced aspect, though I'm sure they'll still want to appeal to the less twitch-oriented players.

I'm more than willing to pay for an MMOFPS -- in fact, once Huxley comes out in 2006, I will be.... Unless revamped SWG takes the cake. An MMORPG + FPS, with all the customization, personalization, persistant world and leveling and everything we know and love... It's amazing. Planetside was amusing, but lacked many integral MMORPG elements... But it was the first MMOFPS to my knowledge, a stepping stone.

As far as too many jedi... The cat's already out of the bag. There's already a bunch of jedi, and everybody who wants one would get one in a few months of grinding. It's just a matter of current jedi-players wanting to remain elite and rare. The fact is that jedi are the heroes of Star Wars, central to the plot, and while they should be few, no player wants to pay money be the grunt with the gun who gets cut down by the hero's lightsaber. That doesn't fly in an MMO. So they're finally opening up jedi as an accessable "class" now, and I imagine gameplay will be like an MMO version of... Jedi Knight II Outcast, or Jedi Academy, or that crap. People with guns, and people with lightsabers, FPS-style, but within an MMORPG with persistant items, crafters, housing/cities, etc. If it's done well, it'll be perfect. I agree about the timeline, but if they're making such a drastic revamp, they could easily shove the timeline up a bit and away from the GCW. And that's not to say that "respeccing to Force Sensitive" (which is what you start as) and quest-grinding from that to Jedi would be any easier than FS village grinding. It may still be comparable, just different.

All I know is... I'm gonna be on Test Center tomorrow testing this stuff out. If this means what I hope it means... (Which means I can use skill to shoot the crap out of certain annoying jedi on my server who are only uber in PvP because of loot and being jedi, not because of skill)... then I'm going to have a blast. It's my personal opinion that gear/loot should give you an edge in combat, but it should not hand you victory. It's up to the player to succeed or fail, to use tactics, not just push the "I Win" button (dervish Razz ).

I'd like to be able to strafe sideways and spray red laser fire, and duck behind a wall if I see those bolts reflected by a saber back at me, if I'm quick enough. The collision-detection part is going to be absolutely astounding. What if a Master Defender could stand in front of you with their saber out, and deflect incoming fire, and actually protect you? How OMFG is that? Twisted Evil

Oops. Didn't mean to rant, but when I get on a roll... Anyway, looks like LucasArts is doing this themselves and isn't impressed with what SOE did, and I have much more faith in them. Twenty bucks says the revamp will be good.

Edit: Olink, as far as your original post, I believe there's going to be another "class", Engineer, which will encompass Architect, Shipwright, and stuff like that involving "technical skill."

I never said if it was good or bad, I havn't seen it in live yet so I can't tell.

The thing that annoys me the most is that no items will decay, thus ADK's are completely useless. A friend of mine has bought ADK's for almost 200 million credits.

I hope it'll be that good. I just hope it won't lock out the other parts of the game and turn it into a complete FPS game.

Would make sense. Creature Handler is gone for sure though, and politician won't be available, but the people who are already politicians will keep it until they change.

When you're on Test Center, be sure to send me a tell Smile (Olink)

No one said politician wouldn't be in the game anymore, it just won't be a starting profession. You'll still be able to go to a politician trainer and learn all the sklls just as you do with pilot. If SOE put any thought into how this patch would affect people who run cities i bet they'll make politician not require skill points so it doesn't interfer with the other professions.
